about

Another song that I learned with Nick Pickett back in art school days. It was collected from Ted Goffin of Catfield, Norfolk in the 1920s and later published in the Penguin Book of English Folk Songs. Like The banks of Newfoundland, this is a song about sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, but in very different circumstances. The story, which has echoes of the ballad Brown Robyn's Confession (Child ballad number 57) combines high action and supernatural undercurrents. The interesting tune, which was written down in 5/4, has evolved into something a bit more uneven over the years.
