about

When I was at Art School in the late 1960s, I formed a duo with my fellow student and good friend, Nick Pickett. We plundered the Penguin Book of English Folk Songs for our repertoire and this was one of the first songs we learned. I have been singing it regularly ever since. That's the mark of a good song. It' was collected from John Farr of Gwithian, Cornwall in 1926. In vivid language, it tells of some of the hardships endured while crossing the Atlantic ocean from Liverpool to New York in the days of sail.
